Jean Claude Van Johnson (Pilot), 2016
Jean-Claude van Damme, Kat Foster
Dir: Peter Atenico
So, I am admittedly a Jean-Claude Van Damme fan. I enjoy the movies of his that are generally liked, and I have a soft spot for the bad ones. Some of my earliest and best childhood memories are going to see his films with my dad. So it’s likely because of that I can still find enjoyment out of these films no matter how bad they are. Going into this show I was ready to watch something that wasn’t very good. I am a fan, but I’m not a blind fan. I know poor acting and filmmaking when I see it.
With all that being said, I watched Jean Claude Van Johnson, and boy did I have fun. The show doesn’t take itself too seriously and does it in a way that’s not too cheesy. The premise is that Jean Claude Van Damme is a retired black-ops spy and his movies were covers for his missions. It’s explained that he has retired, but after running into an old flame he decides to get back into the game. That is the plot in a nutshell. If you’re a fan of fun, parody, meta- and self-aware humor this show is for you. I absolutely recommend this to anyone that was a Van Damme fan in the past or anyone that just likes to have fun.
I have watched this episode three times now and I can’t wait to watch it again. I have gone on Amazon to vote for more. I want to see what else they have in store. This is obviously my favorite of this round of Amazon pilots. Take 30 minutes out of your week and pop this on your TV. You will not regret it.
