To say I was a fan of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers as a kid would be a huge understatement. I had all of the toys, the soundtracks and the VHS tapes. I even saw the Power Rangers live at the Columbus Convention center. My grandfather would get up early on Sunday just to wait outside of Toys-R-Us for the latest shipment of Zords. I even had the privilege of meeting Jason David Frank. My fandom runs deep.
I’ve been anticipating this movie since I heard about it’s release. The concept was intriguing and the casting of Brian Cranston as Zordon had me sold.
What did I think of the film? I loved it. I absolutely had a very good time watching the movie. Is it the best movie of the year? Hell no! Was it better than anything that has ever come out in the Power Rangers universe? Absolutely. This film is a cross between Chronicle and The Breakfast Club. The performances were surprisingly enjoyable. RJ Cyler who plays Billy Cranston the blue ranger is someone to keep an eye on. This kid brought some real depth to a character that was kind of boring in the previous incarnation. It’s not just him either. Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, Ludi Lin and Beck G were very good in their roles. What could have been bland dialogue was made interesting by the actors delivering the lines. It was a shock to me. Now,I’m not crazy and saying this is the greatest acted movie of all time. I’m just saying for a Power Rangers film they did a great job. Better than anyone will expect. Bill Hader as Alpha 5 was a lot of fun. Elizabeth Banks as Rita, while a little over the top at times was also great to watch.
I’ve gushed enough. This movie won’t win awards, but it is a fun time. It’s what summer movie season is all about. Also, stay after the credits for a fun tease. I’ll be going out to see this film again this weekend. I suggest you do the same. 7/10
